Refinishing Decks
One of the most critical steps in refinishing your deck is preparation. For your refinishing project to be successful, wood must be prepped and cleaned correctly. We will ensure that your deck is clean, removing any signs of mold, mildew, and discoloration. We can then properly strip off any old paint or stain, leaving behind a fresh finish for you to apply paint, stain, or sealant. Your deck will look new and refreshed, and your home's value and curb appeal will increase!
Steps In the Deck Stripping Process
To achieve maximum results, we will go through many different steps during the cleaning and stripping process.
- We will begin by moving any deck furniture, plants, etc., on the deck surface. We want the space to be clear of any obstacles, and we don't want to miss a spot that a movable object may cover.
- Any visible dirt and debris will be swept from the deck so we can begin with a smooth surface.
- Before the deck stripping process begins, we will complete a thorough deck washing. Depending on the type and condition of the wood, this could be a soft wash process or a pressure wash process. Softer, older wood could be damaged by pressure washing, so a soft wash would be performed in this case to preserve the condition of the decking material.
- We will then begin to apply the stripper, covering every board. Although the stripper will need to penetrate the wood for approximately 45 minutes, we do not want to allow it to dry.
- Once the deck is saturated, you will visibly be able to see the stain or paint lifting from the deck. This is a sign that it is time to begin scrubbing to completely remove any stubborn, stuck-on finishes.
- Finally, another application of deck cleaner will be sprayed onto the wood to neutralize the stripper. Once it has had time to work, the cleaner will simply be sprayed away with water.
You'll be left with a much newer-looking deck, and now your deck will be ready for a new coat of stain or paint!
